As we approach September 2025, I am excited to share the launch of a new early years Lullanotes music class, tailored for caregivers and their children aged 0-4 years. This session aims to instil a love for music in young kids while creating a nurturing environment for caregivers. The classes will take place at the Heanor library (from Tuesday, 9th September 2025, at 10 am) and Ripley library (from Friday, 12th September 2025, at 10 am), and the best part is that they are entirely free! This initiative has been made possible by the excellent Movers and Shakers community fund managed by Makeshift.

In this post, we will delve into the details of

a music session, its benefits, and what caregivers can expect when they join us.

Why Music Matters in Early Childhood

Music is more than sound; it plays a vital role in children's development. Research indicates that children who engage in regular, active musical activities (such as weekly music playschool) show significant improvements in phoneme processing and vocabulary. Research shows that children who participate in regular, active musical activities (such as weekly music playschool) demonstrate notable improvements in phoneme processing and vocabulary development compared to their peers. A big boost for language development! Furthermore, informal musical engagement at home is linked to better language grammar. Music sessions also promote parent-to-child conversational interactions, a crucial factor in supporting language growth. Music is Language! (Linnavalli et al., 2018; Putkinen et al., 2019; Music Together® study, 2023).

Moreover, music helps young children improve their cognitive skills, enhances social interactions, and supports both gross and fine motor skills. By connecting with music and singing early on, we set a strong foundation for lifelong learning and appreciation of the arts. This class will offer a fun and enriching experience that supports children's overall growth.

What to Expect from the Music Class

Our early years music class promises to be a vibrant and interactive experience. Each session will include a range of activities, such as singing, movement, and exploring simple instruments. The classes will be designed to ensure utmost engagement, allowing caregivers and children to participate together. Please bring drinks to stay hydrated and know that we hold space for whatever the morning (or previous night) has given us!

Structure of the Classes

The classes will cater to children from birth to four years old, aligning with their developmental stages. Each session will last about 45 minutes, allowing enough time for creative exploration without overwhelming participants.

Activities and Themes

Every week will feature themes to explore, introducing different musical styles and cultural influences. Activities will include:

  • Singing Songs: Participants will enjoy familiar nursery rhymes and songs that encourage everyone to join in.

  • Movement and Dance: Fun activities will promote physical coordination and help children develop a sense of rhythm through music.

  • Instrument Exploration: Children will have opportunities to try simple instruments, enhancing their hands-on experience with music.

  • Instrumental Exposure: I will bring and play my instruments, allowing children and parents to enjoy the varied sound textures and hopefully have a mini concert.

These activities are designed to be both enjoyable and educational, ensuring children stay engaged while learning essential skills at the same time.

Benefits for Caregivers

While the focus is mainly on the children, research demonstrates that caregivers also gain significant emotional regulatory benefits from attending music classes (Perkins, R., & Fancourt, D., 2018). There is a scientific reason why your mood improves after you sing! Furthermore, caregivers can connect with other parents, exchanging experiences and building a supportive community, while also creating a unique opportunity to bond creatively with their children. My master's research has emphasised the importance of parental well-being in supporting children's overall ability to thrive. Additionally, I am eager to support adults through a transformative phase of life; you are the real rock stars here!

Building Connections

The music class serves as a valuable social space for carers, allowing them to connect with others in similar situations. This sense of community is invaluable, providing both emotional support and companionship.

Learning Together

Caregivers will learn new songs and activities they can practice at home. This not only reinforces the experiences from class but also encourages ongoing musical engagement, making music a daily part of family life.
